5 Ways to Save Money on Cruises

Five Ways to Save Money on Cruises

Look out for ‘Guaranteed Cabin’ Deals when you book

This type of promotion is similar to an allocated-on arrival holiday where you know the resort you’ll stay in, but not the hotel. With a guaranteed cabin promotion, you’ll usually know the category of cabin you’ll have (inside, ocean-view or suite etc.), but you won’t know the cabin number until you get on board. These deals usually work out cheaper than when you know your cabin in advance. This type of deal isn’t for everyone however; if you need to have a wheelchair-friendly cabin, want one with a bath or prefer to be close to a lift, it won’t be suitable for you, but there are four other ways you can save on your cruises below.

Go Ashore Independently

Depending on where your cruise is going, there’s usually a couple of places that are perfectly suitable to explore on your own. Cruise lines’ own excursions can be costly and if you’ve been to a port of call before, you’ll be able to find your own way around. In some destinations, the cruise port is right in the centre of town so you can take a short stroll and be amongst the action. Examples of these include Barcelona, Monaco, Naples, Barbados and most destinations on river cruises.

Check the Daily Cruise Planner for Special Deals

There are plenty of ways to save your pennies once you’re on board, so make the daily cruise planner your best friend and spot the bargains. Here’s what to look out for:

  • The cocktail of the day is usually cheaper than the others so check this out to see what you should be asking for at the bar.
  • You can bag discounted spa treatments – you can usually get them cheaper on port days or embarkation days as they’re less in demand.
  • There are sometimes special offers in the on-board boutiques so you can treat yourself to a designer frock or some jewellery for formal nights.

Book when there’s a Drinks Package Promotion, or buy a package when you’re on board

Keep your eyes peeled for these deals as they can be great for saving money if you like a drink or two. For example, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines have a drinks package that starts from £15pp per day and includes a selection of wines by the glass, house beers and spirits and soft drinks. If you prefer not to drink alcohol you can also benefit from soft drinks packages on a number of ships. Celebrity Cruises for example have a great package where you can enjoy cans of soda, bottled and freshly squeezed juices, bottled water and speciality teas and coffees from just $18 pp per day

Sign up to cruise lines’ Loyalty Schemes

It definitely pays to check if you’re already a member as not all cruise lines offer auto-enrolment. If you do find a cruise line you love, it’s worth sticking with them as the more cruises you book, the better your discount will be on your future cruises. You can usually find the information on their websites–or ask us as we can help you.
